How to install window clings step by step

Window clings are easy to install when the glass is clean, and the cling is placed carefully. With a spray bottle, a lint free cloth, and a squeegee or credit card, you can apply window clings with fewer bubbles and a smoother finish.

What you need

Before installation, get these tools ready:

  • Glass cleaner, mild soap and water
  • A lint free cloth
  • A spray bottle with water
  • A squeegee, sponge, or credit card
  • Masking tape for marking the position
  • The backing paper, if you want to store the cling later

Step 1: Clean the glass surface

Clean the entire surface of the window before you apply the cling. Use glass cleaner to remove dust, grease, and marks, then wipe it dry with a lint free cloth. A dirty glass surface can trap air bubbles and stop the cling from sitting flat.

Step 2: Check the cling and liner

Peel back one corner and check which side should stick to the window. In many cases, the non-printed side goes against the glass, while the printed side faces out. Remove the liner or backing paper carefully so the material does not fold onto itself.

Step 3: Spray the window

Lightly spray the window with water. For some window clings, it also helps to mist the cling side lightly before placement. This makes it easier to move the cling, adjust the position, and smooth it into place.

Step 4: Place and mark the cling

Place the cling onto the window and position it where you want it. For larger pieces, you can mark the top edge with masking tape first so it is easier to set the design in the centre. Once it is in position, press it lightly so it stays in place.

Step 5: Smooth from the centre outward

Use a squeegee, sponge, or card to smooth the cling from the centre towards the edges. This helps remove excess water and push out bubbles as you go. Work slowly so you do not lift the material by accident.

Step 6: Remove bubbles and let it dry

If you still see bubbles, keep pressing them towards the edges. If needed, gently peel back part of the cling and spray a little more water before you smooth it again. Once the cling is in place, remove any excess water around the edges and let it dry.

Conclusion

Window clings are one of the easiest ways to turn plain glass into something useful, whether that’s a promotion, a bit of branding, or a seasonal display. Once you’ve cleaned the window and lined the cling up properly, the rest is quick.

If you want custom static clings that are easy to design, look professional, and work well for retail shops, events, and short-term campaigns, Sticker it makes the whole process simple.

FAQs about window clings

How do you apply window clings without bubbles?

Clean the glass surface, spray a little water, and smooth the cling from the centre towards the edges. This helps remove air bubbles and excess water before the cling dries.

Why is my window cling not sticking?

The window may not be clean, or the wrong side of the cling may be touching the glass. Check the liner side, clean the surface again, and reapply it.

Can you store window clings and use them again?

Yes, many window clings can be reused. Keep the backing paper, place the cling back on it, and store it flat.

Do window clings go on the inside or outside of the window?

Many products are designed to apply on the inside of the window, but it depends on the design and material. Check the product instructions before installation.
