How do holographic security stickers work?

You’ve probably come across more than one hologram security sticker without realizing it. They’re on passports, credit cards, and many high-value products.

But what are they, really? How do they work? Can you just use a holographic sticker to secure your products? Read on to find out.

What are security holograms?

Security holograms are used to protect official documents and products. They’re hard to counterfeit and are available with different levels of optical security. How are security holograms made?

Security holograms are made using a metalized film. This film is created by applying a thin layer of metal to a polyester (or other clear plastic) base. The combined layers are then passed through embossing rollers.

These rollers are engraved with your custom design. As they roll over the film, they stamp that design into the material. There are also laser-based methods that etch your design into the surface instead.

Do hologram stickers have security features?

Holographic stickers are not the same as true security holograms. They’re made from a similar material, a vinyl base with a metalized layer, but the process is different. These stickers are printed using a digital printer, not lasers or embossing rollers.

What you can do with holographic stickers is tap into the visual association of security holograms. Since real custom security holograms can be expensive (starting around 30,000 units), holographic stickers are a much more affordable option for smaller businesses.

They replicate a similar appearance. As light hits the sticker, the holographic image shifts and reveals a rainbow effect.

How can I create a holographic image?

To play with the holographic effect, you can add multiple layers of color. For example, printing a single solid color directly on top of the material will create a colored metallic effect.
