What's the difference between decals and stickers?
Decals and stickers might look alike at first glance, which is why many people use the terms as if they mean the same thing. But they’re not exactly the same. If you've ever ordered one when you really needed the other, you're not alone.
What is a sticker?
A sticker has two layers: the front with your design, and a backing paper that protects the adhesive. When you’re ready to use it, you just peel it off and stick it down. Easy.

Stickers are usually printed on paper, plastic, or adhesive vinyl. You’ll find them on laptops, water bottles, notebooks, packaging, and all sorts of smooth surfaces. They come in all kinds of shapes and styles. Some are small and decorative, others are large bumper-style stickers used for branding or fun messages.
While some custom stickers are waterproof or UV-resistant, many are better suited for indoor use. Paper ones, especially, can wear down over time. If you need something that lasts longer or can handle more wear and tear, vinyl is usually the better option.

What is a decal?
A decal is a more specialised type of sticker, often used when you want something larger, more detailed, or longer-lasting. Unlike standard stickers, decals usually have three layers: the backing paper, the vinyl design, and a transfer tape on top. This top layer helps you position and apply the decal cleanly.

You’ll often see vinyl decals on cars, windows, walls, floors, or signs. They’re commonly used for vehicle graphics, wall decals, and shop window displays. The transfer tape helps keep everything in place, especially for cut vinyl designs with separate lettering or intricate shapes.
Most transfer decals are designed for solid surfaces and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. They're more resistant to fading and weather than regular stickers, especially when made with vinyl or polyester.
Main differences between decals and stickers
It’s easy to confuse decals and stickers, but these key differences can help you choose the right one.
Layers
- Stickers usually have two layers: design and backing paper
- Decals usually have three: backing paper, vinyl design, and transfer tape
Application
- Stickers: peel and stick
- Decals: use the transfer tape to position, then press down using a card or squeegee
Best for
- Stickers: smaller items like water bottles, laptops, notebooks
- Decals: larger surfaces like walls, windows, or vehicles
Durability
- Stickers vary depending on the material. Some fade or peel over time
- Decals (especially custom printed ones) are more durable, particularly outdoors
Design complexity
- Stickers are great for colourful designs and simple shapes
- Decals are better for cut vinyl lettering, script fonts, or precise layouts
Surface compatibility
- Stickers: best on flat, smooth surfaces
- Decals: also work on curved or lightly textured areas, depending on the material
Just remember, not all stickers are decals, but most decals are technically a type of sticker.
